Post the behind the scenes. Share the numbers. Document the process. Let people watch you figure it out in real time.

And if you already have leverage, that advice is correct. Visibility amplifies what is already working. The creator with a proven offer, a clear positioning, and a track record of delivering results can build in public because they have something worth watching.

If you do not have any of those things yet, building in public is not a strategy. It is performing a business you have not built yet for an audience that cannot pay you for the performance.

Most people who are building in public are doing it for validation, not traction. There is a recognizable pattern to it.

The announcement before the idea is tested.

The cost is not obvious until you have paid it.

Speed is the first thing that goes.

When people are watching, every pivot becomes a public narrative that has to be managed. Every failed test has to be explained or quietly buried. The phantom phase has a specific operational structure. It is not hiding indefinitely. It is a deliberate sequence with a clear exit point.

Define the narrowest possible problem first.

Not a broad category. A specific, named, painful, recurring problem that a specific type of person has and is actively trying to solve. The narrower the problem definition, the faster the test cycle, and the cleaner the data.

Build the minimum offer.

Not the full product. Not the brand. Not the visual identity. The smallest version of the solution that solves the specific problem for the specific person. The thing that delivers the outcome without the production overhead that will come later when the outcome is proven.

Test it where the audience already exists.

Not your audience. The audience that already has the problem and is already gathering in places you can access. Cold outreach. Niche communities. Targeted small-spend ads. The goal is to find out whether a stranger with the problem will pay for the solution in the absence of every advantage that an established brand provides.

Track one metric.

Money.

Not likes. Not follows. Not DMs that say this is great.

Conversions. The offer either produces them or it does not.

Iterate on the offer, not the aesthetic.

The most common mistake in this phase is redesigning the visual identity when the conversion problem is in the messaging, the positioning, or the offer structure. The logo is not why it is not converting. Fix the thing that is actually broken.

The documentation of what the offer actually produces for actual buyers. This is the asset that makes the transition from phantom to visible worth making. Not the documentation of your process. The documentation of your results.

When To Stop Being A Phantom

The exit point from the phantom phase is specific and it is not arbitrary.

You stop when you have a repeatable result.

Not a single successful sale. A pattern. The offer that has converted consistently across multiple buyers who found it through different channels is an offer that has been validated beyond the possibility that it was one lucky transaction.

You stop when the messaging is clear enough that buyers can explain what they bought and why in language that you did not give them.

When the testimonial describes the outcome in the buyer’s own words and those words match the problem you set out to solve, the messaging has achieved the clarity that makes public visibility useful.

You stop when you have proof that converts.

The case study, the result, the outcome documentation that a skeptical stranger would find credible without any prior relationship with you.

At that point, building in public works. Because you are not asking an audience to believe in something unproven. You are showing them something that has already happened and inviting them to have the same experience.

The sequence most people are running is: visibility first, then hope that the results follow.

The phantom sequence is: results first, then visibility to leverage what already works.

One gets an audience for a business that does not exist yet.

The other gets buyers for a business that has already proven itself.

Build the thing that works.
